About Us

Phoenix Supply Company Pty Ltd, formerly Phoenix Sawmill Supply Co Pty Ltd, was founded in July 1980, by Bill Smithers and Gordon Richardson, the previous Managing Director and Production Manager respectively of Spear & Jackson Australia Pty Ltd.

Both these men, who were then in their mid to late 60’s saw a real need to ensure that the Timber Industry had access to Quality, Competitively priced and Locally Manufactured Circular Saws. So with the assistance of two former Spear & Jackson Saw Makers, this little company on the 7th July 1980 manufactured the first of many Circular Saws to come for the Timber Industry.

In December 1984, Bill Smithers, the Managing Director of Phoenix Sawmill Supply Co, then invited Kevin Richardson, Gordon's son, to join the company. In the succeeding years as the company sort to expand, new products were added to the company’s Product Range, and these included Wide Bandsaws and Chipper Knives along with associated products.

At the same time we were seeing major changes to what was required in the manufactured finish on Circular Saws and Bandsaws. This was the introduction of Carbide Tipped Teeth to Circular Saws and Stellite Tipped Bandsaws. Therefore to keep up with the requirements, Phoenix became associated with Cleancut Saws and Western Saws, who respectively became our manufacturing arms for Circular Saws and Bandsaws.

On the 1st September 2007,having recognised and perceived the prospects of a very bright future for the company, not to mention an opportunity to keep it’s people employed and a local manufacturing company running, Kevin Richardson purchased the company outright. This required changing its name to Phoenix Supply Company Pty Ltd, setting up a bandsaw factory in North Altona, Victoria and a Circular Saw and Consumable Products Factory in Taylors Beach, N.S.W.

With the purchase of the company, Phoenix acquired the Australasia distribution rights for Wright Machine Tool Company, with their range of Sharpening and maintenance Equipment for Saws. Along with this, to continue our goals of service, came the employment of Tracy Dasey (Kevin’s Daughter) as Office Manager.

In early 2016, with a view to ensuring the ongoing success of the company, Chris Carre’ was employed to help enhance and expand the Companies position. Chris is employed as Kevin's 2-IC, and now together they are working towards future expansion.

July 2017 we gained the expertise of Mat Veilgaard to oversee the operations in our Bandsaw Factory and this enabled us to complete the welding process in-house. Mat has since completed training in the USA on the Wright Machinery and is now also our Wright Service Technician.

In September 2020 after Covid-19 took hold of the World, we learnt to work differently - remotely. We closed the Sydney office and Tracy moved the administration side of Phoenix to an office in her home. Kevin finally took retirement leaving the day to day operations of the company to Tracy and Chris. Although he is no longer in the office or on the road, he has been known to do the odd trip and pop-in to visit our customers that he has had dealings with for so many years!

Proud Fact

Our Company’s success is a result of the fact that we have never lost sight of our forefathers principles, and that those same principles still apply today. We are very proud of the association that exists between Phoenix and all of our old and new customers.

Also and just as importantly, Phoenix Supply Company is the ONLY Australian Owned and Managed Company that manufactures BOTH Wide Bandsaws up to 14"(355mm) wide and Circular Saws up to 72"(1.8m) in diameter.
